Frequently Asked Questions

Lorem Ipsum is dummy text derived from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC), scrambled to make it look like natural Latin. It has been the standard placeholder text in printing since the 1500s and in digital design since the 1980s.
Placeholder text lets designers and developers focus on layout and typography without the distraction of meaningful content. Readable content draws the eye to the words; Lorem Ipsum shifts focus to the visual design itself.
Yes. This generator uses the standard Lorem Ipsum word bank. The classic opening "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…" is preserved when the classic opening option is enabled.
Lorem Ipsum is derived from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC. The scrambled version that became "Lorem ipsum" was introduced by a 1500s typesetter who scrambled the Latin to create unreadable filler, first traced by Richard McClintock in the 1990s.
Several fun alternatives exist: Hipster Ipsum uses trendy vocabulary; Bacon Ipsum uses meat-themed text; Cupcake Ipsum uses dessert words; Cat Ipsum uses feline phrases. These are useful when you want placeholder text that sparks conversation in design reviews without distracting from layout critique.
As a rule of thumb: use 1 paragraph for a single content block or card description, 3–5 paragraphs for a blog post body or landing page section, and 10+ paragraphs to simulate a full long-form article. For hero text or taglines, use 10–15 words.
Latin (or scrambled Latin) is used because it looks like real text without being readable to most audiences. If placeholder text is in a familiar language like English, reviewers tend to read it and comment on the content rather than the design. Latin text shifts focus to layout, spacing, and typography.
Paragraphs generate complete blocks of 4–7 sentences each — best for body content areas. Sentences generate individual complete sentences — useful for headlines, card subtitles, or short descriptions. Words generate a flat list of words without punctuation — ideal for tag clouds, short UI labels, or testing fields that accept a small number of words.
Yes, if left on a published page. Lorem Ipsum on live pages is considered thin or low-quality content by search engines, which can lead to lower rankings or deindexing. Always replace placeholder text before publishing. Lorem Ipsum is safe only in local development, staging environments, and design mockups that are never indexed.
Yes. The source text — Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum — was written in 45 BC and is thoroughly in the public domain. The scrambled Lorem Ipsum derivative has been used freely since at least the 1500s. You can use generated Lorem Ipsum text in any project, commercial or personal, without attribution or licensing concerns.

Your Layout Was Tested Against the Easiest Possible Content
Lorem ipsum tests one scenario: medium-length, well-behaved text. Real content is empty, enormous, or an unbreakable 42-character German compound. Test for those.

Why Lorem Ipsum Leaks Into Production — Placeholder Text in Design Systems, Empty States, and API Docs
Lorem Ipsum serves different functions in design mockups vs component library documentation — and confusing them produces staging environments and production pages with Latin placeholder text that leaks through QA. Here's why CSS placeholder (form input hint text) and design placeholder text are completely different things, why empty states designed with Lorem Ipsum data are never properly designed for the zero-data case, and why API documentation should use example.com email addresses not Lorem Ipsum values.

Why Lorem Ipsum Is Statistically Biased for English Layouts — and When Content-First Design Is Better
Lorem Ipsum's Latin word-length distribution is statistically different from English, which is why layouts that look balanced with placeholder can break with real copy. Here's the average word length across languages, why button and navigation placeholder text is particularly misleading, how Cicero's long-sentence rhetorical style differs from web copy, and when content-first design eliminates the placeholder problem entirely.

Where Lorem Ipsum Actually Comes From: Cicero, a Mid-Word Cut, and Centuries of Corruption
"Lorem ipsum" isn't a real Latin phrase — it's literally the tail end of "dolorem ipsum" ("pain itself"), cut off mid-word from a genuine passage of Cicero's philosophy, then scrambled and partially invented over centuries of typesetting. Here's the actual source text, how a coherent philosophical passage became nonsense, and why the "fakeness" arguably works in its favor as placeholder text.

Why Layouts Approved with Lorem Ipsum Break When Real Content Goes In: The Length Mismatch Problem
A mockup gets filled with Lorem Ipsum, approved, and the real copy — 40% longer — breaks the layout in ways nobody saw during approval. The mismatch happens because placeholder text length is arbitrary (chosen to "look right") while real content length is determined by what needs to be said. Here's why headlines are the most commonly mismatched element, the "greek text vs realistic text" spectrum, and why testing multiple placeholder lengths (not just one) matters for layouts that are close to final.
