Your Layout Was Tested Against the Easiest Possible Content

Lorem ipsum tests one scenario: medium-length, well-behaved text. Real content is empty, enormous, or an unbreakable 42-character German compound. Test for those.

Your Layout Was Tested Against the Easiest Possible Content

The Layout That Only Works Once

Your card component looks perfect. Title, two lines of description, a neat button. Then the real data arrives and you find:

  • A product name that runs to four lines
  • A description field that's empty
  • A user with no surname
  • A price of €1,249,999.00 where you'd designed for €49.99
  • A German compound noun that overflows its container

None of these appeared in testing, because the placeholder text was three tidy sentences of Latin at exactly the length that made the design look good.

Placeholder text isn't just filler. It's an implicit assertion about what your data looks like — and if that assertion is wrong, the layout is validated against conditions that never occur.

The Cases That Actually Break Layouts

Lorem ipsum tests one scenario: medium-length, well-behaved text. Real content spans a much wider range, and the failures cluster at the extremes.

Empty

The field is blank. Optional description, missing bio, product with no reviews yet.

What happens? A collapsed container, an orphaned label, a card that's half the height of its neighbours, or a heading followed by nothing. Empty states are the most commonly untested case and among the most visible when they break.

One character

A single-letter name. A rating of "5". A one-word title.

Layouts with fixed proportions often look broken with very short content — a card designed around three lines of text with one word in it reads as an error rather than a valid state.

Very long

Three or four times your expected length. A product name that's really a specification. A user-generated title with no length limit.

Watch for overflow, text escaping its container, wrapped buttons, and broken grid alignment.

Long unbroken strings

customer_account_reference_identifier_value

These can't wrap at a space because there are no spaces. Without overflow-wrap or hyphens, they extend past their container and break the layout horizontally.

Email addresses, URLs, file paths, database identifiers and German or Finnish compounds all fall into this category. Lorem ipsum contains none of them.

Special characters

Ampersands, angle brackets, quotes, emoji, accented characters, currency symbols. These test escaping as well as layout.

Emoji in particular have inconsistent widths across platforms and can affect line height.

Right-to-left and non-Latin scripts

Arabic and Hebrew require the entire layout to mirror. Chinese and Japanese have different line-breaking rules and no spaces. Thai has no word spaces either. Devanagari has different height requirements.

If your product supports any of these, lorem ipsum tests none of the relevant behaviour.

Where Lorem Ipsum Is Still the Right Choice

Worth being fair to it. There are cases where deliberately meaningless text is better than realistic content.

Early visual composition. When you're evaluating typographic rhythm, column width, or grey-value balance, readable content is a distraction. Reviewers read it and comment on the copy instead of the layout.

Demonstrating text-heavy templates where the specific content genuinely doesn't matter and won't for the foreseeable future.

Testing character rendering at scale — how a typeface performs across a large block.

The Lorem Ipsum Generator produces text at whatever length you need:

  1. Choose paragraphs, sentences or words.
  2. Set the quantity.
  3. Copy the output.

Use it when meaninglessness is the point, and generate several lengths rather than one — a short version, a medium one, and one deliberately too long.

Building a Test Content Set

The practical approach isn't choosing between lorem ipsum and real content. It's maintaining a small fixture set that covers the range.

For every text field in a component, keep examples at these lengths:

Case Purpose
Empty Collapsed containers, orphaned labels
1 character Minimum-content layout
Typical The happy path
2× typical Wrapping behaviour
5× typical Overflow and truncation
Long unbroken string Horizontal overflow
Special characters Escaping and rendering
RTL or CJK, if supported Direction and line breaking

That's eight fixtures per field, and it catches almost everything.

Build these once and reuse them. A shared fixtures file with named cases — TITLE_EMPTY, TITLE_OVERFLOW, TITLE_UNBREAKABLE — makes them available in Storybook stories, visual regression tests, and manual QA.

Design the truncation strategy deliberately

Every field that can overflow needs a decision:

Wrap. Container grows. Fine for descriptions, problematic in fixed-height grids.

Truncate with ellipsis. text-overflow: ellipsis for single lines, -webkit-line-clamp for multiple. Needs a way for the user to see the full text — a tooltip, an expand control, or a detail view.

Scroll. Rarely appropriate for short fields, sometimes right for a log or a code block.

Prevent at input. A maxlength on the form field. The cleanest solution where the content is under your control, and impossible where it isn't.

Deciding this per field, at design time, is far cheaper than discovering it in production.

Realistic Content for Later Stages

Once the layout is structurally sound, switch to representative content.

Use production data if you can. A sample of real records, anonymised. Nothing tests a layout like the actual distribution of your content.

Generate realistic fakes if you can't. Libraries like Faker produce plausible names, addresses, dates and sentences in multiple locales. Names in particular are worth generating from a realistic distribution — they vary enormously in length, contain apostrophes and hyphens, and include scripts your design may not have accounted for.

Write real copy for anything that ships. Empty states, error messages and onboarding text are content, and content written under deadline pressure at the end of a project is worse than content written alongside the design.

Preventing Leaks Into Production

Placeholder text reaching production is a recurring embarrassment, and it's preventable:

Ban the string in CI. A grep for "lorem ipsum" in your build pipeline, failing the build on a match. Trivial to implement.

Never seed a database with lorem ipsum in a shared environment. Staging data has a way of being promoted.

Keep placeholder text out of default values. A component with lorem ipsum as its default prop will render it wherever the prop isn't passed.

Make empty states explicit. A component that renders placeholder text when data is missing will eventually render it to a user. Render a proper empty state instead.

Practical Tips

Test the extremes first, not the happy path. The typical case is the one you designed for; it's the least likely to reveal a problem.

Include an unbreakable string in every fixture set. It's the single most common cause of horizontal overflow.

Check empty before anything else. It's the most frequent real-world state for optional fields and the most commonly untested.

Set overflow-wrap: anywhere on user-generated text containers as a default safety net.

Screenshot your components at each fixture length and diff them. Visual regression testing catches layout breakage that unit tests can't.

Don't use lorem ipsum for anything a stakeholder will review. They'll try to read it, get confused, and comment on the wrong thing.

FAQ

When should I use lorem ipsum? Early visual composition, when readable content would distract from evaluating layout and typography.

What's the main problem with lorem ipsum? It's one length, one script, and well-behaved. It tests the one scenario least likely to break your layout.

How do I test long unbroken strings? Include a long compound word or URL with no spaces in your fixture set. These reveal horizontal overflow that spaced text never will.

Should I test right-to-left text? If your product supports RTL languages, yes — the entire layout mirrors, and the failures are structural rather than cosmetic.

How do I stop placeholder text reaching production? Add a CI check that fails the build on the string, and never seed shared environments with it.

Is Faker better than lorem ipsum? For later-stage testing, generally yes — it produces content with realistic length distributions and locale variation. For early composition, meaningless text is sometimes preferable.

The Takeaway

A layout validated against one length of well-behaved Latin has been validated against the easiest case available. The fix isn't abandoning placeholder text — it's generating it at several lengths, adding the awkward cases lorem ipsum can't produce, and deciding what happens at each extreme before real content finds out for you.
