Link count vs link equity: why they're not the same

PageRank (and its many successors and variations) is a link-based authority signal — pages that receive more links from more authoritative sources rank better. But PageRank isn't simply "count the links pointing here."

Two links pointing to the same destination page from the same source page are not twice as valuable as one link — duplicate links on a page pass at most the same equity as one. (Actually, only the first link encountered in the DOM is typically used for PageRank passing when multiple links point to the same URL.)

Link position matters: early research and ongoing Google statements indicate that links in the main content area of a page are valued differently from links in navigation, footers, and sidebars. The reasoning: content area links are editorial — a writer chose to link to that resource because it's relevant. Navigation links appear by template on every page; they're structural, not editorial.


The Reasonable Surfer Model: how Google thinks about link value

Google's "Reasonable Surfer" patent describes a model where different links have different probabilities of being clicked by a "reasonable surfer" — and link equity is proportional to that probability.

Factors that increase click probability (and thus link equity):

  • Prominent position in the main content
  • Anchor text that's descriptive and relevant to the destination
  • Appearing early on the page (higher probability of being seen)
  • Being the only link or one of few links to that destination

Factors that decrease click probability (and thus equity passed):

  • Being in the footer or sidebar (users rarely click these)
  • Being one of dozens of links in a navigation list
  • Having generic anchor text ("click here," "read more")
  • Being marked nofollow (no PageRank transfer, by convention)
  • Being an image-only link with empty alt text

The practical implication: a link in the middle of a paragraph of content, with descriptive anchor text, to a relevant resource, passes meaningfully more equity than a footer link to the same destination — even though both appear as "one link" in a link extractor.


What a link extractor reveals for internal linking analysis

Counting all links on a page reveals the total outlink budget — but analyzing the link distribution reveals structural patterns worth examining:

Navigation and footer link dominance: if a page has 50 outlinks and 40 of them are navigation/footer template links, the 10 content links are the ones doing meaningful SEO work. A site audit that reports "this page has 50 outlinks" without this context is incomplete.

Content link patterns: what pages receive content links (editorial, value-passing links) from what other pages? This network reveals the site's actual internal equity distribution — which pages are being propped up by editorial endorsement from other content, vs which pages receive only template navigation links.

Orphaned pages: pages that appear in sitemaps but receive no internal links at all — not even navigation links — are effectively hidden from crawlers following links. They rely entirely on sitemap-based discovery.

Deep linking depth: how many clicks from the homepage does it take to reach important pages via internal links? A product page that's only accessible via 5+ levels of navigation receives less crawl priority and less accumulated equity than one linked from the homepage.


Anchor text diversity: the signal that's both a ranking factor and a manipulation risk

Anchor text (the clickable text of a link) provides context about the destination page's topic. A page that receives many inbound links with "best running shoes" as anchor text receives a topical signal about what the page covers.

For internal linking: diverse, descriptive anchor text on internal links provides useful topic signals. Linking to an article about trail running with the anchor text "trail running shoes guide" is more informative than "click here."

The manipulation risk: aggressively over-optimizing anchor text (all inbound links using exact-match keyword anchor text) was a pre-Penguin penalty risk for external links. For internal links, there's more latitude — you control your own site's anchor text — but extremely uniform anchor text profiles can still look unnatural.
